Radical Refuge
Radical Refuge
Text: Nahum 1:1–15 Series: Radical Change
Introduction
Radical change requires more than turning from sin—it demands knowing where to run when life shakes around us. Nahum reminds us that God is not only a Judge but also a Refuge. He is not just a consuming fire against wickedness; He is the safe place for His people.
* Scripture: Psalm 46:1-2 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear…”
* John Owen: “A soul resting in God fears no enemy, feels no storm, because the Stronghold Himself is their shield.”
1. The God Who Shakes Nations (vv. 2–6)
* God’s vengeance and wrath reveal His holiness and justice. Human attempts at “God’s vengeance” are always flawed; judgment belongs to Him alone.
* Scripture: Romans 12:19 – “Do not take revenge…’ Vengeance is mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.”
* God’s timing is perfect: He is slow to anger but sure to act.
* Classic insight: Matthew Henry writes, “God’s judgments are sure, though delayed; His enemies cannot escape the day of His wrath.”
* Scripture: Psalm 2:4 – “The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.”
Application: Radical change begins when we stop fearing man and start revering the God who rules all creation.
2. The Refuge in the Midst of Wrath (v. 7)
* Nahum 1:7: “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who take refuge in Him.”
* Enemies may surround us, but the safest place is the center of God’s will. He is our stronghold and our strength.
* Scripture: Psalm 91:1–2 – “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty…He is my refuge and my fortress.”
* Classic insight: Augustine said, “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
* Earthly strongholds fail; the Lord’s cannot. His goodness carries us through every storm.
Application: Radical refuge means relying on God as your first and only shelter in life’s storms.
3. The Certain Fall of Oppressors (vv. 8–14)
* God sometimes allows enemies to rise against His people as discipline or correction. Disobedience has consequences.
* When we return to Him, God Himself confronts the oppressor. He breaks yokes and shatters chains.
* Scripture: Isaiah 10:27 – “The yoke will be broken because you have grown so fat.”
* Scripture: Galatians 5:1 – “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”
* Classic insight: John Calvin: “God frees His people not by our own strength, but by His sovereign power, shattering every foe and lifting every burden.”
Application: Radical change trusts God to fight battles we cannot, relying on His timing and victory.
4. The Proclamation of Peace (v. 15)
* Nahum 1:15 announces good news on the mountains—peace breaking into chaos.
* Ultimately, it points to Jesus Christ, the ultimate Messenger, who has already won victory over sin, death, and every spiritual enemy.
* Scripture: Colossians 1:20 – “Through Him God reconciled everything to Himself…making peace by the blood of His cross.”
* Scripture: Philippians 4:7 – “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
* Classic insight: Charles Spurgeon: “Christ is the city of refuge to which the weary soul may flee; here, mercy meets the sinner, and peace replaces the storm.”
Application: Radical refuge is found in Christ. Live with confidence, celebration, and peace, knowing God has defeated every enemy.
Conclusion
Radical change demands a radical refuge:
* The world shakes—God is steady.
* Enemies rage—God is victorious.
* Life overwhelms—God is your stronghold.
* Scripture: Psalm 62:6 – “He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.”
Call to Action: Today, radically shift your refuge from temporary shelters to the eternal Stronghold. Trust Him with your fears, your battles, and your future.
